On 28 July 2011, the Nebbiolo grapes began turning colour and stand as proof that this year’s harvest will be inevitably precocious. Over the past week, the weather has been anomalous: intermittent rains and atypically cool air were characteristic of late July this year. Contrary to what many people think, I believe that these dry conditions have favoured accelerated ripening, helping the speed of substances from the terrain. Sweltering heat would have certainly slowed the phenological phases. Things being as they are, the memory of vintages like 2003 and 2007 is ever more present.
