veraison + 12 compared to last year

The veraison, or colouring of the fruit on the vine, is twelve days late compared to last year, or perhaps it would be better to say that last year it was twelve days early…  see this post from last year.

I can say with confidence that this year will be more normal; the timeframes for the harvest will probably be more classic. Let’s not forget, however, the difficult spring, with major temperature changes and constant rain, to which we need to add the copious hail that recently hit the Barolo zone. The damage is serious, but luckily we escaped it once again here in Serralunga d’Alba…

Versaison is an important stage, when the plant changes its way of thinking: first it was concentrated on vegetable growth, now it is focused on fruit. The colour change dictates the maturation timeframe and the possible harvest date, which for the Dolcetto will certainly not be before mid-September, unless there is a sudden weather change…

Another thing that might put us off balance in 2012 are the quantities, which are not very plentiful due to both the hail and the difficult debourrement and post-blossoming, due in turn, in my opinion, to bad spring weather
