Prowein 2012: an exceptional trade fair

I am back from Dusseldorf, where Prowein just came to a close. In my view this is the best European trade fair in the wine industry. Founded as a fair for German importers, over time it became the point of reference for professionals from Northern Europe, Eastern Europe and Canada, with producers coming from all over the world but especially France, Germany and Italy. The stands are relatively small, the appointments concrete and fast, the visitors are generally high-calibre and the transport organization admirable. I did not see many people from Asia this year, but it must be said that … Continua

Barolo Vertical Tasting – Live, Taste, Love (Part Three – Love)

Love. Because if something is the fruit of an act of love, there is a difference. It’s perceptible and does not pass unobserved. An almost instinctive act, that of putting something aside that is close to being finished, that is becoming scarce, but that one cares about, becomes a far-sighted and generous act. The bottles that were uncorked for the Barolo Vertical Tasting were all of this and much more. Throughout the tasting these bottles told the story of a family, of a territory, of fifty years of farm economy and commercial dynamics that, even if no longer in practice, … Continua

Barolo Vertical Tasting – Live, Taste, Love (Part One – Live)

For Julia Roberts in her recent film they were “Eat, Pray, Love”. Three words are sometimes enough to describe a philosophy of life, as in this case, or as in ours, an event and its contents. After the Barolo vertical tasting from 2001 to 1958, organized in our wine cellar and part of “Afternoons of Nebbiolo First”, the words “Live, Taste, Love” came to my mind. Live like the comments of the journalists and buyers hosted by Albeisa who participated in the vertical tasting, an experience not to be missed, a bit for curiosity, a bit for learning, since the … Continua

Encounters: Rivetto at Eataly

Zio Nando and Matiré were protagonists last weekend at Eataly, where they captivated more or less expert drinkers with the quality and history that have always distinguished Rivetto wines. We offered every visitor a taste of our wines and a short “seminar” to give an idea of what each glass represents: the history of our family and the day-to-day work that takes place on our hills. The Barbera d’Alba Zio Nando represents tradition, as it is one of the businesses’ historic wines. The original planting dates to 1944 but is joined by more recent ones. The Langhe Nascetta Matiré represents … Continua

The Serralunga 2007 in Serralunga: Preview!

The Barolo population is passionate, accessible, untiring, and … heart-warming! By the Barolo population I mean both producers and connoisseurs of the “king of wine”. For both categories this description fits like a glove. I became aware of it at the tasting organized by Go Wine in collaboration with the Bottega del Vino at the Castle of Serralunga d’Alba, open specially for the occasion last 26 and 27 March. On one side was the desire to tell the story behind the fruit of their labour and on the other side the desire to listen attentively and get a preview of … Continua

Trip itinerary: Florida, Quebec, Colorado

Thirty above, twenty below…a considerable excursion as you can perhaps imagine. From sunny Miami to chilly Montreal and Denver in just ten days. And against sticky heat, against ice and gusts of freezing wind, there was a single ally for all: the 2006 Barolo Serralunga. It was a pleasant surprise that I wouldn’t have expected, especially from a city like Miami where I was ready to offer wines perhaps more suited to its climate. Let’s take a step back: MIAMI, 1-4 February – Nicolò Tita, our importer since July 2010, Brescia “DOC”, has established himself in the best places in … Continua

Brazilian Futebol and Langa Wine…

It is really a truism that football and wine are the two passions that tie Italy and Brazil. The first link has a historical nature while the second has more recent origins for the Brazilians, but they  both engross and move us in the same way. Yesterday I had the pleasure of hosting lunch for my friend and wine journalist Alexandre Bronzatto of the magazine Gosto, and the owner of five restaurants in São Paulo and Rio, Mr André Lima. Both are from São Paulo but with a major difference: one roots for the Corinthias and the other for the … Continua

An Imperial of Barolo for Clint Eastwood

Today, an Imperial of Barolo Leon 2006 officially departs, headed straight to California and addressed to Clint Eastwood. It is a way of thanking the noted director for having made our Barbaresco and the magical land of Langa a protagonist in one of the scenes in his new film, Hereafter. My dad Sergio signed the five litre bottle, making a special dedication to the famous American actor and director. I am happy and proud that our family business can, on this occasion, be the ambassador of the quality of Piedmont throughout the world.

The excellence of Barolo in Munich

On Monday, November 15, a tasting featuring around twenty Barolo producers was held at the Bayerischer Hof hotel in Munich. The event was organized by the Barolo Barbaresco Consortium of Alba, in collaboration with the wine journal Vinum. My brother Alessandro participated and introduced our most prestigious range of wines to the specialized German public. The organization of the event was impeccable and the professionalism was absolute, fully worthy of a product as important as Barolo. The seminar led by the wine expert and journalist Jens Priewe was very interesting and instructive. Jens choose our Barbera d’Alba Zio Nando as … Continua

Highlights from Piemonte wines in London

There could not have been a better choice than the elegant Institute of Directors of London for hosting thirty Barolo producers, who presented their wines last Monday to the specialized British public. The organization of the event was entrusted to the wine journal, Decante, under the direction of the communications agency, Wellcom di Alba. The 11:30am seminar led by Stephen Brook was interesting and educational, during which Brook and around fifty others tasted ten wines, which according to him represented the best of the Langhe, and among which was my Barbera d’Alba “Lirano soprano” 2007. Events organized in this way, … Continua
