The malefic breattanomyces
The “Brettanomyces” (nicknamed “bretty”) is a kind of yeast of big dimensions, very adaptable and rough, spread all over the cellars in the world. Of its metabolism we can observe the production of volatile phenols (off flavour) that in wine can be identified with smells of stable, more in general smells from a farm. Some smell leather, chemical sweat, plastic and spices. Nobody speaks of fruit smells: where bretty rules, no space for fruit. We fight and fight against this yeast, cleaning the cellars, vaporizing all tanks, the right amount of sulfur during the treading, but it’s hard to kill. This … Continua
Dangerous photo
China, Pecking, Tiananmen Square: it’s absolutely forbidden to take pictures of commercial products in the square which is the symbol of the regime. Policemen are everywhere, they check and give directions.Furtively, a picture is taken, and then a fast, fast run. The policemen do realize it, but it’s too late, it’s done! The brave photographer is F.G., my agent in China. Since he (or she?) cannot take ownership of the act in China, he sent it to me, telling me that Rivetto Wines will be everywhere in China, even in the Tiananmen Square. The project is ambitious, maybe too much, … Continua
Nebbiolo Prima: dinner in Barolo
I’m just back from a very pleasant night at Locanda del Borgo Antico di Barolo, where all Barolo’s from Langhe producers were the progatonists, together with the comments from international journalists. The 2006 vintage was highly appreciated, especially for its potential when it ages. Wines were matched perfectly with food cooked by chef Massimo Camia, especially this rabbit on a bed of artichokes and olives “taggiasche”, truly excellent! During the night I was able to chat with old schoolmates and very appreciated producers, like Pittatore from Bric Cenciurio, Scarzello from Azienda Agricola Scarzello and Pietro Colla from Poderi Colla. At my table, … Continua
International Journalism Festival in Perugia: I was there "virtually"
Well, I was there… or better, this blog was there! Digital Natives presented my winery’s blog to the international audience in Perugia, as an example of wine marketing best practice. Wine producers with blogs in Italy are really few, I think you could count them on one hand; I believe it’s a good way to bring the consumer closer to the complicated world of wine, making it easier for them to understand what lays behind and inside the glass. Wine is Love by Francesco Zonin and Poggio Argentiera‘s blog by Paolo Paglia were also presented in Perugia: both of them … Continua
