Barolo Vertical Tasting – Live, Taste, Love (Part Two – Taste)

Taste. Images from the first three rounds of the Bartolo vertical tasting from 2001 to 1958. The journalists and buyers participating in Nebbiolo Prima were commenting on the vintages together with Sergio, Alessandro and Enrico,  but the real protagonists were the wines. Helmut Knall, Monica Larner and Subhash Arora were tasters in the first round. Ola Dybvick, Gianluca Mazzella, Fabio Cagnetti, Christian Wenger, Otmar Kiem, Martin Kilchmann, Gerhard Eichelmann, Edoardo Patrone, Pierluigi Gorgoni, Tim Felkner, Davide Oltolini, Brad Vanderpool and Robbin Gheesling were tasters in the second round. Diego Sorba, Alberto Rizzo and Andrea Terraneo were tasters in the third … Continua

Grandpa Sergio remembers – part one

The years are 1947 to 1953. There was no television: it didn’t arrive at our house until 1958, for the world football championships in Sweden. Didì, Pelè, Vavà, Dialma Santos, Nilton Santos … Final score: 5-3. My first hazy memories are of when I was three or four years old: accompanied by mom and dad I roamed around the barrels in the wine cellar in Alba and on the farm in Sinio, where I played with the children of the tenant farmers amongst the roosters, hens, geese, sheep, pigs and in the stall with the “fasson” calves. Our favourite game … Continua

Finish it off with something sweet: Barolo Chinato and Paola’s Bounet

I was searching for a worthy finale to my Easter menu, a homemade dessert to place beside the inevitable Colomba,  when I decided to let wine be my inspiration. My meal will finish with our Barolo Chinato:  the mix of the herbs, roots and spices of the family recipe is an unequalled ally for digestion and provides pleasures for the palate. I decided that my dessert would be a chocolate one: a bounet. Here are the ingredients for the traditional recipe: 6 eggs 1 tablespoon of fine ground coffee 40 gr of unsweetened cocoa powder 40 gr of sweetened cocoa … Continua

Stakes for the new vineyard

In this video, Enrico talks about placing the stakes for the new Zio Nando vineyard: the grapevine shoots were planted last year and now it’s time to set up the support. The terrain, the marl and the importance of exposure, microclimate and grape variety … in a word, Terroir.

Rivetto – Montanera: twin cities and cinema

The Barbaresco Cè Vanin will depart from Montanera for Spain on Saturday, 9 April. Jaime Montanera, already an honorary citizen, will visit the centre of “cuneese”, twinned with the Catalan town of Val De Boì, for the occasion of the traditional delivery of the Palmon. Francesco Dadone, mayor of Montanera will reciprocate the homage of the Spanish delegation with our Barbaresco, which he had the opportunity to appreciate at a tasting led by Alessandro last February. A curiosity: the town is the birthplace of Giuseppe Filippi, the first Italian film cameraman. The gift is thematic and Sergio signed the label … Continua

From the perspective of Anna, the Vina Studija store manager

In Riga the population is divided in two, with 50% speaking Latvian and 50% speaking Russian, and different lifestyles, cultures and traditions. Obviously this is an important ethnic mix that complicates the study of this small Baltic city’s market. Here we are helped by Anna, the store manager of Vina Studija, a chain of quality wine stores, to better understand the tendencies of the average Latvian consumer.

Wine culture

A book by the excellent journalist, Luciano Pignataro, was published just a few days ago: 101 VINI DA BERE ALMENO UNA VOLTA NELLA VITA SPENDENDO MOLTO POCO [101 WINES TO DRINK AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, SPENDING VERY LITTLE]. It is the latest in the class of books offering a selection of wines with an appealing price/quality ratio. Although through my work as a vendor I deal with wines that one finds on the market in at a high price point, I do not fail to recognize that most consumers cannot frequently permit themselves a bottle of wine of … Continua

The second hailstorm

On June 29, while I was in London, I was informed that a violent storm hit Serralunga d’Alba in the late evening, but I didn’t think that along with heavy rain there would also be hail. I didn’t realize until today just what happened during that atmospheric event. Luckily, the hail affected only a limited area, that of the nebbioli situated on the upper part of the Lirano hill. The damage was lessened by the fact that the hail was relatively light and I don’t believe that it has compromised the quality of the grapes. This is the second hailstorm … Continua

Europe likes sulfites

It was with disappointment that I read in the magazine Vigne Vini that the EU regulatory project for organic wine, that should have lowered the limits on sulfur in wine, is being drawn out. A majority of countries in Northern Europe, including France and Portugal, rejected the proposal put forth in Brussels to limit the presence of sulfites to 100 mg/l for red wine and 150 mg/l for white and rosè. The majority are instead in support of raising the limit as high as 120 mg/l for red and 170 for white and rosè, levels not much lower that those … Continua
